Haemorrhoids & Haemorrhoidal Artery Embolization

Illustration of hemorrhoid artery embolization procedure and its effect on hemorrhoids.

What are Haemorrhoids?

  • Haemorrhoids (also called piles) are swollen blood vessels inside the rectum or around      the anus.
  • They are common, especially in adults.
  • Symptoms include:
    • Bleeding during bowel movements
    • Pain or discomfort
    • Itching or swelling near the anus
    • Feeling of incomplete emptying

Why do Haemorrhoids Occur ?

  • Straining during bowel movements
  • Chronic constipation or diarrhoea
  • Sitting for long periods
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity or low-fibre diet

Usual Treatments for Haemorrhoids

  • Lifestyle measures: High-fibre diet, more fluids, exercise
  • Medications: Ointments, suppositories, pain relievers
  • Minimally invasive procedures: Rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, laser treatment
  • Surgery: Haemorrhoidectomy (for large or severe cases)

Haemorrhoidal Artery Embolization (HAE)

What is HAE ?

  • A modern, minimally invasive treatment for bleeding haemorrhoids.
  • Performed by an Interventional Radiologist.
  • Uses a tiny catheter inserted through the wrist or groin artery to block the blood supply feeding the haemorrhoids.
  • This reduces swelling, bleeding, and discomfort.

Benefits of HAE

  • Minimally invasive (no surgical cuts)
  • Performed under local anaesthesia
  • Less pain compared to surgery
  • Quick recovery – often same-day discharge
  • Preserves normal anal anatomy (no risk of anal stenosis or incontinence)

How is the Procedure Done ?

  1. A small tube (catheter) is placed into an artery in the wrist or groin.
  2. Using X-ray guidance, the doctor identifies the arteries supplying the haemorrhoids.
  3. Coils are injected to block these arteries.
  4. Blood supply reduces → haemorrhoids shrink → symptoms improve.

 ⏱️Duration: 30–60 minutes
🏥Hospital Stay: Usually same day or overnight

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Most patients return to normal activities in 1–2 days.
  • Mild pelvic discomfort may occur but is temporary.
  • Follow-up visits ensure good healing and symptom relief.
