Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Treatment in Rajkot

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) ?

DVT is a condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, of the the legs.
If untreated, the clot can travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE), which can be life-threatening. Pulmonary embolism is the most common cause of sudden death in hospitalized patients.

Common Symptoms

  • Swelling of the leg (usually one side)
  • Pain, heaviness or cramping in the calf or thigh
  • Redness or warmth over the vein


Seek immediate medical care if you have sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood; these can symptoms of pulmonary embolism.

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Prolonged bed rest or long travel
  • Recent surgery or trauma
  • Family history of clotting disorders
  • Obesity, smoking, or sedentary lifestyle
  • Pregnancy or use of hormonal therapy

Treatment & Interventions

Modern medicine offers minimally invasive procedures for this ailment.

1. Medication

  • Blood thinners (anticoagulants): Prevent new clots and stop existing ones from getting bigger.
  • Usually first-line therapy, sometimes combined with interventions.

2. Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis (CDT)

  • A thin catheter is inserted into the vein, guided by imaging.
  • Clot-dissolving drugs (thrombolytics) are directly      delivered into the clot via the catheter.
  • Clot dissolving drugs are continued for 12-72 hours depending on the lot      burden.


Benefits:

  • Directly targets the clot for faster relief
  • Preserves vein function and reduces long-term damage
  • Effective in large or fresh clots

3. Mechanical Thrombectomy

  • A special device is threaded into the vein via a catheter.
  • The clot is physically broken up and removed using suction, rotation, or a mechanical trap. Examples are Angio jet device and Penumbra device.
  • Often used in conjunction with CDT.


Benefits: 

  • Immediate removal of large clots
  • Reduces swelling and pain quickly
  • Often used when rapid recovery is needed or thrombolysis is not suitable

4. IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) Filter Placement

  • A small metal filter is placed inside the body’s largest vein (the inferior vena cava).
  • It  acts like a “safety net” to catch clots traveling from the legs before they reach the lungs.
  • Typically used in patients who cannot take blood thinners or have recurrent clots despite treatment or already have large clots in lung arteries.


Benefits:

  • Prevents pulmonary embolism
  • Minimally invasive, done via a small vein in the groin or neck

  • Rapid relief of leg pain and swelling.
  • Prevents long-term vein damage (post-thrombotic syndrome).
  • Reduces risk of pulmonary embolism.
  • Minimally invasive, faster recovery.
  • Particularly beneficial for young and physically active patient group.
