Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) for Fibroids

A treatment option for women with uterine fibroids

What Are Uterine Fibroids?

  • Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus.
  • They are very common and can cause symptoms such as:
    • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
    • Pelvic pain or pressure
    • Frequent urination
    • Bloating or enlarged abdomen
    • Problems with fertility (in some cases)

What Is Uterine Artery Embolization?

  • Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive procedure done by a specialist doctor called an interventional radiologist.
  • Instead of removing the uterus (like in hysterectomy), UAE works by:
    1. Inserting a tiny tube (catheter) into the blood vessels that supply the uterus.
    2. Injecting tiny particles to block the blood flow to the fibroids.
    3. Without blood supply, fibroids shrink over time and symptoms improve.

  • You are not currently pregnant.

What Are the Benefits?

  • Minimally invasive (no large incisions)
  • Shorter recovery time than surgery
  • Uterus is preserved
  • Significant improvement in bleeding and pain for most women
  • Usually only 1–2 nights in the hospital

What to Expect ?

Before the Procedure

  • You’ll meet with your doctor to discuss your health, symptoms, and goals.
  • MRI or ultrasound may be done to check the size and number of fibroids.

During the Procedure

  • Performed under local anesthesia with sedation.
  • Small puncture in the groin or wrist to insert catheter.
  • Procedure usually takes 1–2 hours.

After the Procedure

  • Some cramping and pain are common for a few days.
  • Most women return to normal activities within a week.
  • Fibroids gradually shrink over 3–6 months.

Are There Risks?

Like all medical procedures, UAE has risks, though serious complications are rare. Possible risks include:

  • Pelvic pain or cramps
  • Temporary fever or nausea

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my fibroids come back?
Most fibroids shrink permanently, but new fibroids can sometimes develop.

Can I still get pregnant after UAE?
Some women have successful pregnancies after UAE, but fertility may be affected. If pregnancy is important, discuss options with your doctor.

Is UAE better than surgery?
UAE is less invasive and has a faster recovery, but surgery may be recommended in certain cases.

What are other indication of UAE.

  • Bleeding during child birth,
  • Uterine Arterio-venous malformation
  • Gynaecological malignancy.
  • Uterine adenomyosis.
