  •  A varicocele is an abnormal swelling of the veins inside the scrotum (the pouch holding the testicles).
  • Similar to varicose veins in the legs.

Why Does it Matter?

  Varicoceles can :

  •  Lead to reduced sperm quality
  •  Reduce testosterone levels
  •  Cause testicular shrinkage (atrophy)
  •  Be linked to male infertility

Symptoms

  • Often no symptoms
  • Sometimes:
    • Heaviness or discomfort in the scrotum
    • Enlarged, twisted veins (“bag of worms” feel)
    • Pain that worsens when standing long or during exercise Fertility issues

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination by a doctor
  • Scrotal ultrasound to measure vein size and blood flow

Varicocele Embolization

A modern, minimally invasive treatment

What is it?

  • A  non-surgical procedure performed by an Interventional Radiologist
  • Uses imaging guidance (X-ray) to block the faulty veins, so blood flows only through healthy veins

How is it Done?

  1. A small catheter (tube) is inserted through a tiny pinhole in the groin or neck vein
  2. The doctor injects contrast dye to see the abnormal veins clearly
  3. Tiny coils or special plugs are placed in the enlarged veins
  4. The blood is redirected to healthy veins
  5. The procedure takes about 30–45 minutes

Benefits of Embolization

  • No major surgery or stitches
  • Local anaesthesia with mild sedation (no general anaesthesia needed)
  • Day-care procedure – go home the same day
  • Quick recovery – resume normal activities in 1–2 days
  •  High success rates in improving  fertility and symptoms
  •  Very low risk of recurrence
